St. Pat’s launches new Reconciliation Action Plan!
St. Pat’s launches Reconciliation Action Plan! St. Pat’s has a strong, action-based commitment to reconciliation and contributing to a more equitable future for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. As part of this commitment, for the last year the organization has been working on developing a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). This process has included consultation with clients and staff, as well as seeking expert advice from local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders and service providers.
“St. Pat’s RAP is an important step in our commitment to support reconciliation and improve social outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples,” says St. Pat’s CEO Mr Michael Piu. “St. Pat’s seeks to do this in a variety of ways including creating the conditions to improve employment and retention of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, and ensuring that St Pat’s staff have the ongoing training and support to deliver culturally secure services that drive improved social outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. In this action plan, St Pat’s recognises the great strengths of the unique culture and history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, the learnings from which, if embraced, can be of benefit to all Australians.”
St. Pat’s has already developed several initiatives relating to the RAP including:
- Establishing a culturally appropriate outreach program working specifically with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people that are homeless through a place based model.
- Examining our own practices around recruitment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff.
- A commitment to ensuring all staff participate in cultural awareness training.
- Putting in to place Acknowledgment of Country /Welcome to Country, acknowledging Aboriginal and Torres Strait People at internal and external meetings as Traditional Custodians of our land.
- Consulting and engaged with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients to plan and host events that recognise days of significance (e.g. NAIDOC week).
- Participating in Sorry Day and National Reconciliation Week events.
- Including a variety of cultural activities for clients resulting in more artwork on display around the Centre, creating a space which respects and celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and Peoples.
